Founded in 2015, Koh Tao International Primary was opened as a not for profit school on the island of Koh Tao for local Thai, Burmese and expats. Opened by an Australian/Finnish couple for their son and his friends to attend, the school has grown through the generosity of celebrity actor Eliza Taylor, who helped to raise funds in an effort to support the clear need for a proper education on the island. The school supports a growing number of poor Burmese and Thai families, who once had to send their children away to rural areas to be educated in low funded government schools. The majority of these children were likely to never finish Primary School and those that did ended up in low paid jobs by age 11 or caring for their family in the house at home. The school has grown, but needs funding to build facilities to school a further 150 children in need. The project is currently supported by local expat parents and overseas fundraisers and charitable donations.
