WEMS initiative was developed by United Nations University (UNU) in 2005, to address challenges in wildlife law enforcement information collection, compilation, and sharing process. WEMS database is designed to cater national government’s needs in managing information and reporting them and support them in accomplishing national targets and fulfilling international commitments under MEAs and for SDGs. WEMS is a web-based information system with GIS functionality able to identify trading routes and provide location analysis of illegal trading and poaching of wildlife species. The data entered is stored in the format of Interpol eco-message providing real time query based on computer analysis by relevant enforcement authorities; thereby providing a common information sharing platform between national enforcement agencies attending to wildlife crime within the country and with regional networks. WEMS initiative has two established regional centers: WEMS Asia at the Asian Institute of Technology via AIT Solutions to pilot project in Asia and WEMS Africa implemented through the Lusaka Agreement Task Force (LATF) with Congo-Brazzaville, Kenya, Tanzania ,Uganda, Liberia and Zambia.
