Thai-Myanmar border.. can get cheaper wooden furniture from Myanmar, orchid, jewelry and souvenirs
Nasser, I doubt that. You can go up to the border crossing - that is, you can visit the markets around there. The market is not 2-3km before the border but just a 100 or 200m. EDIT: I see what you might be referring to - there is a little bit of o mans land\ between the border checkpoint and the Myanmar border. If you look at the location of the checkpoint relative to the actual borderline here on Google Maps, it's not that far, just a few hundred m. However, because this border is not yet open to foreigners (and presumably, because there is no other Thai checkpoint after the border crossing building) only travelers that are allowed to proceed to the Myanmar side may pass. I assume that special permission is also required for anyone, Thais included, who want to pass through the 4km of no man's land after the Phu Nam Ron checkpoint in Kanchanaburi province and who don't intend to enter Myanmar. Once the checkpoint is moved to the actual border there, this will no be longer an issue. As for the other checkpoints you mentioned - all of them are located at the actual border. Pilok is an exception, there is a barrier about 1km from the border and you are allowed to go up to the Myanmar post if you request permission BUT Pilok is not even a local's border crossing. That's the difference. For the time being, foreigners are not allowed to cross to Myanmar at this border, however, they are allowed to go up to the border from both the Thai and Myanmar sides. It may even be possible to stay overnight in Mawdaung if you come from Myeik or Kawthoung, just not cross the border (yet). Hopefully, this border will open up as the 5th Thai-Myanmar international border crossing in the near future.
There are furniture made of wood and many orchid.
