Cold, efficient, officious people. Mae sae itself is beautiful. And so are the people.

Border is popular with tourists making visa runs. Officers seem to be more tolerant of these things these days. They can smell visa runners from a mile away. So dress nice and smell good. Don't expect officers to be chatty. They usually aren't. But they are efficient here. And very, very clean. Kudos. They will ask you why you are going into Myanmar and for how long. If you answer correctly, you get a big white Thai smile, the best in the world. *after exiting Thai immigration, walk along the bridge and cross midway to the other side to enter Myanmar. Don't be a noob.

I had a 60 day tourist visa with an additional 30 day extension paid at immigration. About a day or two before my 90 days were exhausted I rode my scooter here from Chiang Mai, crossed the border into Myanmar and came back into Thailand for an additional 30 days giving me 4 consecutive months in Thailand. If you are coming here on your motorbike be aware that you can secure free parking before the checkpoint on the left side of the road next to the little shops selling sunglasses and other goods. If you accidentally miss this area and pass under the bridge you will see some additional parking but may be asked for some money by an enterprising gentleman. I don't think this is necessary so just find your way back to the aforementioned merchandise stands and park for free.

Check point as every other in the world. No worse no better than its counterparts. Everything goes smoothly here. Customs officers are polite and respectful towards tourists and native people alike. Keep it up.

Very interesting border crossing, and a neat experience (remminds me a little of crossing the border bewteen the US and México /กระบวนการข้ามชายแดนง่ายกว่าสำหรับคนไทยนะครับ ). For 10 US/500 you are processes into Myanmar for one day, and a nice stamp on your passport. They speak good English on the Myanmar side, and the customs agents (both Thai and Myanmar) are very helpful and friendly. The Myanmar border agents do keep your passport, but it's legit (as many others have previously commented). I found it a bit disappointing on the Myanmar side that there are not much Myanmar souvenirs to buy.. An excellent experience, and well worth the 10/500 for a cool passport stamp.
