สถานที่แห่งนี้เป็นประวัติศาสตร์และตำนานมากมาย เคยเป็นไร่ธนะรัชต์ ของจอมพลสฤษดิ์ ธนะรัชต์ ต่อมารัฐบาลมอบให้มหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ใช้ประโยชน์ในด้านงานวิจัยและสถานที่ฝึกนิสิต โดยใช้ชื่อว่าไร่สุวรรณวาจกกสิกิจ เพื่อเป็นเกียรติแก่ หลวงสุวรรณวาจกกสิกิจ อดีตอธิการบดีผู้ร่วมก่อตั้งมหาวิทยาลัย โดยไร่สุวรรณวาจกกสิกิจ แห่งนี้มีผลงานด้านงานวิจัยเมล็ดพันธุ์ ข้าวโพดทำมูลค่าให้ประเทศนับแสนล้านบาทในเวลาต่อมา
