Executive Coaching The executive coach is a sounding board; a mentor; a source of creative ideas and honest feedback. The coach’s loyalty is to the individual, in such a way that will provide benefit to the organization. A successful relationship will run the gamut from tactical discussions and strategic planning to the most intimate kinds of psychological explorations and human development. The client looks to the coach to help heighten his or her self-awareness, to provide honest feedback, and to remain a constant source of advice in a world of persistent change. Much of the coaching process is about helping clients to re-connect with their “self” in a way that brings new insights into what they want from life and how they would like to relate to the organisation in which they work. To be successful, therefore, the relationship between coach and client has to be confidential and built on trust; coaching sessions provide a space for “contained reflection”. And the qualities of a good coach include being empathetic, non-judgmental, curious, and imaginative, as well as having a high level of self-awareness and a basic desire to help. Executive Coaching Process Effective executive coaches use the skills of active listening, reflection, and building rapport. They also provide feedback and utilize the therapeutic interventions of exploring overt and covert meanings, interpretation, high-quality inquiry, and the use of metaphor. These skills are demonstrated against a deep knowledge of business and organisations, and of the competencies required for success in senior management positions.
